# 4

The new Martin, the new Mandola (called Nelson) and the new African drum, someone once said I am difficult to buy for but I can't see how. Tonight I am playing a wee gig, well actually a couple of numbers, one of which I wrote especially for this evening. But I will be playing the new Martin to an audience for the first time and I am beginning to feel all Southpaw and circa 1972 (Southpaw was the name of the band then). I must admit it all feels ok. Its hard to believe it but I have been playing guitar for 50 years now (still no better). My mother bought me one for Christmas and I have played it almost every day since then. Of course I have new guitars and the old one has had its day - though I still have it. I would like to play on its antique properties but it came from Woolworths in the first place so I reckon cultural nostalgia. But here is another nostalgia - the same mother who bought the guitar died two years ago today. So its fitting I am playing tonight - how the world turns. Fifty years from then to here - I just wish she could hear it, she did like it so. I might post a tune on this later - but for now I have to go and get my boy, who is coming to hear me play for the very first time. How the world turns - I could write a song about that:

# 3

The moon over Westminster Cathedral, it feels like a lifetime ago since I took this picture and yet it was only a couple of weeks. Goodness but I have missed January, thus far. They call it the dead month after the celebrations but I confess I feel as though I have been asleep since my birthday in December (I have never felt as ill as I did those first three weeks in January). But I am back, with a new book contract to be shared with people I like to work with - yay # 1- and some new songs which I will play next week and in a couple of weeks time - yay # 2 - and I have now worked out how to go from writing, to recording, to editing, to downloading and now to setting it all up as an iTunes album - yay # 3 - which is all good, and some new ideas for the year - yay # 4. So for me at least, 2015 has officially started - and thank goodness for that. I will post pictures of the new Martin (guitar) as soon as I take a couple, oh and the new Mandola (called Nelson by Abbi - obviously) the combination of spruce and mahogany used on both of them creates an astonishing sound (mahogany back and sides and solid spruce tops) but this weekend I am taking stock; now that I am actually fit enough to do so. And one of the things I found this morning - because I am sorting out a new passport - is the serendipity of numbers. I never realised before but check these:
Conceived 12/3/54
Born 13/12/54
Christened 13/2/55
I am a combination of ones, twos, threes, fours and fives - its a wonder I got to 60 at all. I would like to say being that age is not so bad - but I have been too ill to notice - so watch this space - and while you are doing so we could listen to Starlings murmurring - its good to be back (occassionally):
